Formed in 2015 from the remains of Bobby Campbell's Little Death project, The Jake Leg Band is fundamentally a rock and roll band heavily influenced by roots music and the traditions of the Grateful Dead. They do not fit the jam band mold, keeping their primary focus tightly on the songs themselves. Their sound serves as a virtual tour of American music history, blending folk, blues, and Americana .

The group was originally founded by Josh Leik, Tom Dawes, and bassist Blaine Weisser. Lead guitarist Joe Taylor expanded the lineup in 2017, and following Weisser’s passing in 2020, Lin Taylor took over on bass. The current members share deep collaborative ties, as both Joe and Lin Taylor previously played alongside Dawes in the band Life on Mars.
